Mete Şeref Ahunbay

Visiting Researcher, University of Oxford

About

Last Updated: 3rd June, 2026.

I am a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford with Prof. Paul Goldberg, funded by a Walter Benjamin Fellowship from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). My research interests are primarily (convex) optimization and game theory, with an emphasis on analysis of gradient ascent and learning dynamics. I have also previously worked on pricing in electricity markets and efficiency analysis of auctions.

I have a multidisciplinary background: I obtained a BSc in Mathematics & Physics (Joint Honours) at McGill University, an MSc in Economics at the London School of Economics, and a PhD in Mathematics at again McGill University - the latter under the supervision of Prof. Adrian Vetta. I completed my first postdoc at the Technical University of Munich, in the group of Prof. Martin Bichler, where I initially worked on electricity market design, and then on learning dynamics in auctions. I went onwards to a brief second postdoc with Prof. Bary Pradelski & Prof. Panayotis Mertikopoulos, where I worked on complexity theoretic results in the context of bounded rationality.
